Head football coach Hugh Fountain took his state champion Escambia Academy (EA) Cougars football team to Tennessee this past weekend, July 17 and 18, to compete in a 7 on 7 football tournament at the University of Tennessee campus at Chattanooga. The team represented Atmore admirably, making it through the pool rounds on Friday and onto the main stadium field for the Saturday finals. Only the top 2 teams in each of the 4 pools made it to Saturday’s play. Fountain was pleased with the team’s effort. “I thought we played well,” he said. “We were able to play seven games. We didn’t win it all, but we gained good experience. That is important since every one of the players at our skill positions are underclassmen. We would have liked to win, but we mainly go to play the best we can.” A 7 on 7 tournament eliminates both lines, offensive and defensive, and allows the players at the backfield positions to compete with limited contact. The field is shorter and the quarterback has only 4 seconds to pass or the play is considered complete. Fountain said that EA elected to take their linemen even though they wouldn’t play. “We wanted to go as a team and give all the players a chance to be a part,” Fountain said. That was the last camp this summer for the Cougars as they now focus on the opening of the 2015 season just a few weeks away. – See more at: https://www.atmorenews.com/2015/07/22/ea-competes-in-tenn-7-on-7/#!prettyPhoto
