Homecoming 2015

By | Uncategorized

Homecoming 2015 was held October 9th 2015.

Mikayla Spruill was crowned our Homecoming Queen for 2015.

Our SGA and Beta Club each have Service Projects and we want our entire school to participate.

By | SGA | No Comments
Beta Club Project
The Beta Club is collecting can pull tops for the Ronald McDonald house project. If you have any tops you would like to donate please sent them to school with your student.  We would like to have a large quantity by the end of this month.
SGA Project
The SGA is planning a service project for each month this year. As you know, last month the SGA collected stuffed animals to donate to area fire departments. Our goal was to collect 100 stuffed animals. With the help of the EA family, we collected over 150! These stuffed animals have already been delivered. Thank you to all who helped us reach our goal!
For September, the SGA service project is to collect paper products to donate to our area food bank. Our goal is to have at least one item donated per student. We are asking that the classes bring the following:
Seniors – paper towels and/or napkins
Juniors – toilet paper
Sophomores – paper plates
Freshmen – cups
8th Grade – plastic utensils
7th Grade – facial tissues (Kleenex)
6th Grade – bowls
Elementary – any of the above items
As a fund raiser for our SGA, we are doing the Change Game this month. Several middle/high school and elementary teachers have volunteered to help us! Jars with the teachers’ names will be available for students to place change in. At the end of September, the teacher in middle/high school AND the elementary teacher who has the most money in his/her jar will be duct taped to the wall at a pep rally.
The SGA is pleased to announce that Mikayla Spruill was elected as the AISA District Representative, which also means that EA will be hosting the District meetings. We are so proud for this opportunity for both Mikayla and EA. As a District Service Project EA, along with the other schools in our district – Crenshaw Christian Academy, Fort Dale Academy, Monroe Academy, Sparta Academy, and Wilcox Academy, will be raising money for Pilots for Christ. The EA SGA is still considering ways to raise this money. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Mrs. Sasser, Saige Garrett (SGA president), or Mikayla Spruill (SGA vice president) to make that donation. We will be contacting the EA family once the final fund raising idea has been decided upon.
Thank you all for your help! Our SGA’s goal this year is to be competitive in the AISA State Best SGA competition, and this is done through service projects and campus activities. Thank you for all you have done so far! Please help us to make our monthly and yearly goals!

EA competes in Tenn. 7 on 7

By | Athletics, Football

Head football coach Hugh Fountain took his state champion Escambia Academy (EA) Cougars football team to Tennessee this past weekend, July 17 and 18, to compete in a 7 on 7 football tournament at the University of Tennessee campus at Chattanooga. The team represented Atmore admirably, making it through the pool rounds on Friday and onto the main stadium field for the Saturday finals. Only the top 2 teams in each of the 4 pools made it to Saturday’s play. Fountain was pleased with the team’s effort. “I thought we played well,” he said. “We were able to play seven games. We didn’t win it all, but we gained good experience. That is important since every one of the players at our skill positions are underclassmen. We would have liked to win, but we mainly go to play the best we can.” A 7 on 7 tournament eliminates both lines, offensive and defensive, and allows the players at the backfield positions to compete with limited contact. The field is shorter and the quarterback has only 4 seconds to pass or the play is considered complete. Fountain said that EA elected to take their linemen even though they wouldn’t play. “We wanted to go as a team and give all the players a chance to be a part,” Fountain said. That was the last camp this summer for the Cougars as they now focus on the opening of the 2015 season just a few weeks away. – See more at: https://www.atmorenews.com/2015/07/22/ea-competes-in-tenn-7-on-7/#!prettyPhoto

Escambia Academy running back Gordon Brooks

By | Athletics

Escambia Academy running back Gordon Brooks announced Friday morning that he plans to continue his football career at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.

Brooks signed his letter of intent in the EA gymnasium, surrounded by family, friends, teammates and coaches.

“This is what high school sports is all about,” EA football coach Hugh Fountain said. “When kids play in sports, it helps to give them more self-discipline in school, and they learn to handle more responsibilities. This is a great opportunity for Gordon to continue playing the sport he loves, while getting an education.”

Fountain said he was especially proud of Brooks, because he had to work hard to get the required score on the ACT to attend Huntingdon.

“He worked extremely hard, not just on the field, but also academically, in order to achieve his goal,” Fountain said.

Fountain said Brooks had been considering playing at some other colleges, but fell in love with the campus earlier this year when he participated in the AISA All-Star Game. Brooks was also able to meet several members of the Hawks’ coaching staff.

“Gordon is a great kid,” Fountain said. “He’s been a very steady player and was a team leader for us. To know Gordon is to know a guy who comes to practice every day and doesn’t complain. He was an example of the type of team we had this year.”

Escambia Academy wins 2014 AISA Class AAA State Championship

By | Football

By GARRETT KIRK News Sports Writer The Escambia Academy Cougars played Bessemer Academy in the AAA State Championship this past Friday, November 21, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy, Alabama. This marked the Cougars’ first trip to the state championship in school history. The incredible support that was shown to the team before, during, and after the game by alumni, fans, and the community helped give the Cougars great confidence, and when they took the field in Troy, there was no doubt to anyone that they were there to win the title.

The Cougars came into the game with a 10-1 record with their only loss coming from Bessemer in the regular season. After Escambia’s poor performance in the first game, some might have written the Cougars off as sure losers. However, every football fan knows that it is hard to beat a team twice in a season.

The Cougars received the kick-off to begin the game and the craziness began. The Rebels came up with a stop on Escambia’s first possession and then a missed block from the Cougars allowed the Rebels to block the punt on fourth down. The Cougars held tight on defense and got the ball back to the offense. The offense put together a long drive of third- down conversions and capped it off with a fade thrown to Malik Salter in the corner of the end zone. The extra point by Brett Gorum put the Cougars up 7-0.

The Rebels scored twice before the half and held the Cougars to only 1 touchdown, making the score at the half 14 – 7 Bessemer.

The second half began with a fumble from Bessemer and a quick equalizing touchdown from the Cougars. Bessemer struck back in the third and got a 2-touchdown lead on EA. Then, after a long play-action bomb to senior Scott Brantley, the Cougars made it 21 – 28. The defense came up big with a stop, and the Cougars put together a long touchdown drive to tie the game up 28 – 28.

The Rebels drove the ball down the field to near the Cougars’ 30, and the Cougars forced a fourth and 10. The Rebels went for the first down but came up short, and the Cougars had the ball with about 3 minutes left on the clock. The Cougars’ Tim Finklea broke a long run to Bessemer’s 15-yard line, and the Cougars were in a position to win the game. After a few short runs, it was fourth and 1 at the 3. EA originally lined up for the field goal to go ahead by 3, but the Rebels jumped offside, and the Cougars called a time out to talk it over. After the break, the Cougars sent the offense back on to the field. Senior quarterback Brett Gorum snuck the ball through the line for the first down. After 1 more QB sneak, the Cougars went ahead 35 – 28.

Bessemer had a chance to tie with almost a minute left on the clock, but the Cougars’ defense held strong. The Rebels’ quarterback was forced out of the pocket on first down, and he made a bad decision that led to Kris Brown intercepting the pass and sealing the win for the Cougars and giving them the title of State Champions.

The Cougars’ offense produced, but not in the regular fashion. While EA did have 230 yards rushing, they also had 100 yards passing and 3 of their scores came through the air as well. Malik Salter, Scott Brantley, and Tim Finklea all had a receiving touchdown on the night. The rushing leaders on the night were Kris Brown and Brett Gorum with a touchdown each. The Cougars’ defense had a decent night. They allowed only 28 points and 250 total yards from Bessemer. In any case, it was enough to get the job done.

The leading tacklers on the night were John Patrick Sawyer with 9, Josh Fields with 4, and Garrett Kirk with 3 and a quarterback sack.

The Cougars made Escambia Academy history by winning the school’s first ever State Championship. This was truly a game for the ages, and all of the coaches and players thank the supporters of this team and are looking forward to another trophy next year.

EA lifts another championship

By | Athletics

Weight lifting coach Hugh Fountain has once again brought home a championship as Escambia Academy (EA) boys’ team lifted their way to their second consecutive 3-A AISA state weight lifting championship.

A group of more than 50 lifters and coaches traveled to Pickens Academy in Carrollton, Alabama, February 19, to participate in the event, fielding both a boys and girls team. Fountain said that this was the first year for the girls competition, which has only three weight classes as opposed to the boys 18 classes.

“It is much harder to place as a female lifter,” Fountain said.

The EA team had seven lifters who won state titles in their divisions – Chase Bell at 81 lbs., Jackson Bonner at 98 lbs., John Sawyer at 140 lbs., Kris Brown at 158 lbs., Gordon Brooks at 175 lbs., Nolan White at 258 lbs., and James Fuqua in the super heavyweight division.

Three of the competitors also set state records. John Patrick Sawyer set his division’s squat record at 380 lbs. Kris Brown set his division’s record for dead lift at 460 lbs. James Fuqua set the super heavyweight divisions dead lift record at 575 lbs.

“Our kids have come to understand that weight lifting is important in every sport,” Fountain explained when asked about the size of his team. “Every kid who plays high school sports hopes to go to college and play athletics there. We help them understand the way to achieve that is in the weight room. From the lightest to the heaviest, every athlete can improve if they work hard enough at it.”
